Danke Bitte!

Guten tag! Andrew and I got to visit the North Rhine-Westphalia region of Germany following our trip to Provence. Why here? Well, my great-grandfather grew up in this area in a tiny town called Holzhausen-Externsteine. It is pretty far north and we weren’t sure what we were getting into. Would it be cold? What would the landscape be like? How the heck do you pronounce Holzhausen anyways? We took the train from Cavaillon in France to the Horn-Bad Meinberg station and booked a room at a youth hostel in Horn just a twenty minute walk from Holzhausen. Once there, we visited the Externsteine. A rock formation that my great-grandfather used to play on. We also found the house in Holzhausen where he grew up. We wandered through Holzhausen for quite awhile, which has grown a lot I think since my Dad last visited. At first we couldn’t find it, but we stopped in a local pub for a drink and the bartender recognized the house and was able to put us on the right track.
